Top Medical Companies To Own For 2014

As the April 15 tax deadline fast approaches, you probably have questions. Fortunately, we have answers. Every day until April 15, members of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants have agreed to answer selected tax questions from USA TODAY readers. Submit your questions to jwaggoner@usatoday.com.

Q: I have parents living with me at home who have retired. They both receive Social Security and do not work. Their total Social Security is not more than $600 a month. They have no means to support themselves with that much income monthly; hence, I take care of them. I have been claiming them as dependents on my taxes. I wanted to make sure this was legal in the eyes of IRS. If they were to get sick and get hospitalized, would I be responsible for their medical bills if I have been claiming them as dependents and Medicare does not cover something for whatever reason?

Top Medical Companies To Own For 2014: Cyberonics Inc (CYBX)

Cyberonics, Inc. (Cyberonics), incorporated in 1987, is a medical device company. The Company is engaged in the design, development, sales and marketing of implantable medical devices that provide a neuromodulation therapy, vagus nerve stimulation therapy (VNS Therapy), for the treatment of refractory epilepsy and treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and other device solutions for the management of epilepsy.VNS Therapy System includes an implantable pulse generator to provide stimulation to the vagus nerve; a lead that connects the generator to the vagus nerve; equipment to assist with implantation surgery; equipment to assist with setting the stimulation parameters for each patient; instruction manuals, and magnets to suspend or induce stimulation manually. The VNS Therapy pulse generator and lead are surgically implanted into patients generally during an outpatient procedure. The VNS Therapy System consists of a pulse generator, a bipolar lead, a programming wand and software and a tunneling tool.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Company's VNS Therapy System in July 1997 for use as an adjunctive therapy in epilepsy patients over 12 years of age for reducing the frequency of partial onset seizures that are refractory or resistant to antiepileptic drugs. Regulatory bodies in Canada, the European Economic Area, certain countries in Eastern Europe, Russia, South America, Africa, Australia and certain countries in Asia, including Japan, China and Taiwan, have approved the VNS Therapy System for the treatment of epilepsy, many without age restrictions or seizure-type limitations. In July 2005, the FDA approved the Company's VNS Therapy System for the adjunctive long-term treatment of chronic or recurrent depression for patients 18 years of age or older who are experiencing a depressive episode and have not had an adequate response to four or more adequate anti-depressant treatments. Regulatory bodies in the European Economic Area, Canada and Israel have approv! ed the Company's VNS Therapy System for the treatment of chronic or recurrent depression in patients who are in a treatment-resistant or treatment-intolerant depressive episode without age restrictions.

In February 2011, the Company announced FDA approval of its fifth generation generator, the AspireHC generator. In August 2011, the Company announced that the Company discovered a hardware-related design issue with the AspireHC Model 105 and AspireSR (Seizure Response) Model 106 generators. In December 2011, the FDA approved the Company's re-designed AspireHC generator, and the Company resumed its limited commercial release of the generator in the United States.

Pulse Generator

The pulse generator is an implantable, programmable signal generator designed to be coupled with the bipolar lead to deliver mild electrical pulses to the vagus nerve. The pulse generator is a battery-powered device. Before or upon depletion of the battery, the pulse generator may be removed and a new generator implanted in a short, outpatient procedure. The Model 102 (Pulse), Model 102R (Pulse Duo ), Model 103 (Demipulse), Model 104 (Demipulse Duo) and Model 105 (AspireHC), are the VNS Therapy pulse generators the Company offers and are similar in design and manufactures to a cardiac pacemaker.

Bipolar Lead

The bipolar lead conducts the electrical signal from the pulse generator to the vagus nerve. The lead incorporates electrodes, which are self-sizing, minimizing mechanical trauma to the nerve. The lead's two electrodes and anchor tether wrap around the vagus nerve, and the connector end is tunneled subcutaneously to the upper chest area, where it attaches to the pulse generator. The Company offers three lead models in the United States. The leads are available in two inner spiral diameter sizes to ensure optimal electrode placement on different-sized nerves.

Programming Wand and Software

The Company's programming wand and software are us! ed to int! errogate the implanted pulse generator and to transmit programming information from a handheld computer to the pulse generator via an inductive coupling. Programming capabilities include modification of the pulse generator's programmable parameters (pulse width, amplitude and frequency and stimulation ON and OFF intervals) and storage and retrieval of telemetry data.

Tunneling Tool

The tunneling tool is a single use, sterile, disposable surgical tool designed to be used during surgical placement of the bipolar lead. The tool is used for subcutaneous tunneling of the lead between the nerve site in the neck and the pulse generator site in the upper chest area.

Accessory Pack

The accessory pack includes two resistor assemblies used to test the function of the device prior to implantation, the bipolar lead tie-downs and one hex screwdriver. The patient kit includes two magnets, one watch-style and one pager-style.

The Company competes with Medtronic, Inc., NeuroSigma Inc. and CerboMed GmbH.

The rise of public health services, improvements in sanitation and access to clean drinking water have led to a huge improvement in human life expectancy, which has jumped from only about 30 years five centuries ago to more than 75 years in most industrialized countries today.

Advances in medical science have also played a major role, such as the development of antibiotics to treat once deadly infections, surgical interventions to correct once fatal injuries and medications to treat chronic conditions.

We have yet to reach the limit of human ingenuity and today the trend is towards harnessing technology to break the reliance on long-term medication usage to treat chronic conditions. One area where huge strides are being made in that direction is the treatment of epilepsy.

Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disease in the world, affecting more than 9 million people in developed countries alone, and epileptics have a mortality rate more than 25 times higher than the general population. The costs associated with dealing with the disease run in excess of $13.5 billion in the US alone.

The disease is typically treated using a drug regime that includes several pills a day, including anti-convulsants and sedatives which can have unpleasant side effects. Drug therapy is typically successful in controlling seizures in about 70 percent of patients, but about a third of those who don respond to medication find themselves undergoing surgery to essentially remove the area of the brain triggering the seizures.

Cyberonics (NSDQ: CYBX) is making headway into an alternative treatment for the disease, called vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy, which can reduce the number or even eliminate the need for the drugs epileptics depend upon and requires only minor surgery.

Though many companies eventually restored those dividends, some companies are only now contemplating such a move. By following a few simple markers, you can make some well-informed predictions about which companies could soon issue a fresh dividend.

Shares of Vodafone Group (VOD) are up big today after news that Verizon Communications (VZ) could pay as much as $130 billion for the 45% of Verizon's wireless business that Vodafone owns. The possibility that the deal could be completed this week is spiking shares of VOD by as much as 8% in this afternoon's trading, as investors salivate over a balance sheet flush with cash.

From a technical standpoint, things don't get much better than Vodafone: shares of the UK-based phone carrier gapped up to a new high this morning on the news. Making new highs is significant from an investor psychology standpoint because it means that everyone who has bought shares in the last year is sitting on gains. As a result, the "back to even" mentality is less of a concern than it would be for a name with a higher proportion of shareholders sitting on losses.

Investors who aren't risk-averse may want to consider jumping in here; just keep a tight stop in place.

Reasons for weakness in SPY have come from both internal and external forces. Most recently, positives have been seen in collaborative discussions between Verizon (VZ) and Vodafone (VOD), helping support market sentiment and in Guess? Inc (GES), which posted strong rallies on improved quarterly profits. On balance, however, the negatives have carried more weight. Market uncertainty has seen significant increases based on potential military conflicts in Syria. This is being viewed alongside the increased possibility that the Federal Reserve is prepared to start removing monetary stimulus -- a driving factor that has helped SPY rally nearly 155% from the lows seen in the beginning of 2009.

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) said it will pay for construction of an 18-megawatt photovoltaic solar plant in northernNevadato provide power for a data center the technology giant plans east of Reno.

Pending Home Sales Drop 0.6% in October, Hurt by Government Shutdown

NEW YORK (THESTREET) -- Contracts signed to purchase previously-owned homes slipped for the fifth straight month in October, as the government shutdown pushed buyers to the sidelines.

The National Association of Realtors' Pending Home Sales Index declined 0.6% to 102.1 from an upwardly revised reading of 102.7 in September. Year-over-year, the index is down 1.6% and is at its lowest level since December 2012.

Contract activity was mixed, with the index declining as much as 4.1% in the West. Pending home sales declined 0.8% in the South, while there were modest gains in the Northeast and Midwest.

Top 5 US Companies To Own In Right Now

Extremely tight inventory in the high-cost West region was holding back activity, according to NAR. Pending Home Sales , which reflects signed contracts as opposed to closings, is considered a useful predictor of existing home sales. Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the NAR, said part of the decline in activity could be attributed to the government shutdown. In a survey, 17% of realtors reported delays in October, mostly from waiting for IRS income verification for mortgage approvals. Higher home prices, limited inventory of homes and higher interest rates added to already tight credit conditions have weighed on buyer demand in the last several months. Yun expects conditions to ease if job creation continues and mortgage underwriting standards ease once there is greater clarity over new mortgage lending rules that take effect in 2014.

ConAgra’s 6% Drop: Reason for Hope?

ConAgra’s (CAG) is supposed to make things people want to eat. Instead, the market is eating the food company’s lunch today following disappointing guidance.

REUTERS

The Wall Street Journal reports:

ConAgra Foods Inc. cut its full-year earnings outlook, as the packaged-foods company said fiscal first-quarter earnings were softer than expected, especially in its consumer foods segment.

The company now expects full-year adjusted earnings to range from $2.34 to $2.38 a share, down from its prior view of about $2.40.

First-quarter earnings were 33 cents a share, or 37 cents excluding certain items. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters most recently expected 45 cents a share.

Top Undervalued Stocks For 2015

Citigroup’s David Driscoll still has hope for ConAgra’s shares. He writes:

…while ConAgra is off to a disappointing start to F1Q14, we believe that overall US food volumes for the industry and ConAgra are at the cusp of a positive turnaround, in conjunction with the large US crop expected this fall. With ConAgra shares currently trading at 13.5x at the mid-point of management's new F2014 EPS range, we believe that most of the disappointment surrounding today's announcement is likely in the stock….We see good upside in ConAgra shares going forward, as Consumer Food trends are expected to
strengthen, and as Q1 weakness appears to be more macro driven versus a company-specific issue. This puts Kraft (KRFT) under the most scrutiny in our group.

S&P Capital IQ’s Tom Graves concurs:

In light of disappointing EPS guidance from the company, we are lowering our 12-month target price to $38 from $42. Before special items, we are reducing our FY 14 (May) EPS estimate to $2.38 from $2.43, and FY 15′s by $0.08 to $2.62…In FY 14, we expect CAG’s Ralcorp acquisition to be the primary EPS growth driver. We see the stock at an attractive P/E discount to the food group.

Most food producers in the S&P 500 have dropped today. Kraft is off 2.2% at $53.05, Campbell Soup (CPB) has fallen 2% to $41.15 and Kellogg (K) has dropped 1.4% to $59.40.  J.M. Smucker (SJM) has gained 0.4% to $108.53.

Top 10 Wireless Telecom Companies To Own For 2014

By now we’re all aware of the battle raging between Amazon.com (AMZN) and Hachette over the pricing of eBooks. While the consumer is certainly the loser as the two big corporations go head to head, there’s likely a winner from the battle royale as well–Barnes & Noble (BKS).

Associated Press

Maxim’s John Tinker and Kevin Rippey explain why Amazon.com’s standoff with Hachette Books is good news for Barnes & Noble:

Amazon’s standoff with suppliers is an opportunity for Barnes & Noble. Currently, Amazon.com is not accepting orders for titles from Hachette authors, including J.K. Rowling and Michael Connelly, following continued disputes on e-book pricing. In addition, they are not accepting preorders for key Warner Bros. (TWX – $68.92 – NR) titles, such as The Lego Movie, in a separate supplier dispute. The standoffs highlightBarnes & Noble’s value to publishers, as it remains the only alternative book outlet to Amazon.com, and is critical in both the sale and marketing of their books. It is worth noting that, this week, Hilary Clinton staged the launch of her book tour atBarnes & Noble’s Union Square store, although the former first lady and potential presidential candidate did not draw as many fans as the Jonas Brothersor Justin Beiber’s book signing appearances!

Shares in Softbank Corp. (JP:9984) (SFTBF) one of the largest constituents on the Nikkei Average fell 2.2% after The Wall Street Journal reported that the firm Sprint (S) unit is considering a takeover of its smaller rival T-Mobile US (TMUS) , with a bid potentially coming in the first half of 2014.

  • [By Jonathan Berr]

Opposition to the latest wireless rumored wireless merger might have come as a surprise to Sprint’s CEO/pitchman Daniel Hesse and Masayoshi Son, the head of Japan’s SoftBank (SFTBF), which acquired a controlling interest in Sprint for $1.9 billion last year. For one thing, it’s hard to imagine the new company posing much of a competitive threat. A combined Sprint/T-Mobile would have 53 million users — significantly greater than their individual parts, but still less than half the 110 million served by AT&T and the 120 million subscribers under the Verizon flag.

  • [By Damian Illia]

Furthermore, Nippon recently gained access to the iPhone, which earns the firm the opportunity to reverse its share losses in the youth market. Earlier, market share on the wireless side had declined in favor of competitor Softbank Corp. (SFTBF), which had exclusive rights to sell Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone in Japan.
