For some reason, certain companies can attract buyers no matter the circumstance. I would put Symantec (SYMC) in that category. Shares have gained nearly 20% this year even as Symantec prospects deteriorated.

Stocks delivered again in 2014. Even after a poor start in January and wobbles in October and December, the U.S. market climbed 11.4 percent and ended the year close to record levels. The solid gain pushed the bull run for stocks into its sixth year, the longest such streak since the 1990s. Investors have been encouraged by rising corporate earnings and a strengthening U.S. economy, which helped stocks overcome a brief winter chill in growth and tensions with Russia. The stock market also overcame worries about the impact of the end of the Federal Reserve's stimulus program. Those who stuck out the market's ups and downs were rewarded with double-digit returns for the fifth year out of the last six. "Companies delivered and the ability to produce on the bottom line remained resilient," said Jeff Kleintop, Charles Schwab's chief global investment strategist. "Ultimately, that's what stocks track." All the major stock averages are ending the year with respectable returns. The Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) has returned 13.7 percent including dividends, after a return of 32 percent in 2013. The stock market also experienced its biggest bout of volatility in more than two years. Stocks plunged as much as 9.8 percent in October on concerns about global growth and worries about the spread of the Ebola virus. The market also managed to climb despite a big drop in oil prices that hit energy companies. Geopolitical tensions flared as Russia seized Crimea, war broke out in eastern Ukraine and the Islamic State group seized swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria. These were some of the biggest themes in the financial markets in 2014: A Resilient Economy The backdrop for the stock market's gains was a gradually strengthening U.S. economy. Hiring and consumer confidence continued to improve. Despite a big contraction in the first quarter caused by an unusually harsh winter, the economy kept growing. The average pace of growth climbed to 2.7 percent by the end

The ACSI doesn't break down company scores into their component parts, but let's take a couple of wild guesses. American Internet services are generally overpriced and underpowered compared to the options available in, say, Southeast Asia and Western Europe. Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) is trying to change all that by introducing low-cost gigabit fiber service in a handful of test markets. That business is far too small to earn a ranking in the ACSI studies, but it's putting pressure on rivals nationwide to do better. And consumers take notice, which might explain some of these dismal scores.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) messed up, and in a few months they may start paying the price. When Microsoft's Xbox One fails to gain traction the way its current video-game console did -- and when the high-tech Google Glass specs falter at the retail level -- there will be no shortage of scapegoats.

In the end, Apple needs to look at what archrival Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) is doing with hardware partners Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM  ) and Sony (NYSE: SNE  ) by its side -- and then do it better. Executing on this simple plan (or not) will make all the difference for Apple next year.

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

Servers: Server revenue is also in a dangerous position. The graph shows how the market changed from 2008 through 2012, favoring the Iaas (infrastructure as a service) hosting business model (Amazon (AMZN) and Rackspace (RAX)), while leaving the server-side infrastructure business model in great trouble. At this point, the trend towards adoption of hosted Iaas as a replacement for traditional in-house server-side infrastructure can't possibly be reversed.

YouTube has such a vast audience partly because it was among the first to offer a comprehensive platform for online video posting, viewing and sharing. Those early (and largely amateur) videos have been joined by polished, professional ones that have attracted a much wider audience, both to YouTube and a growing number of online video sites. The content that these consumers view ranges from short clips to full-length movies available to rent or own. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Hulu are examples of the full-length video option.

It's a great idea to get children interested in investing early, and buying some stocks for them is a great way to accomplish that. I'd recommend using a very long-term buy-and-hold strategy focused on high-quality, sustainable businesses. I'd forgo dividends and focus on long-term appreciation (just my personal opinion). Stocks that I'd recommend for this strategy include Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) , Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B  ) , CarMax (NYSE: KMX  ) , and Markel (NYSE: MKL  ) . All are great companies that I'd be happy to hold for a decade.

Ted S. Warren/APAmazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Amazon (AMZN) is ruffling a lot of feathers with contractual tussles with Time Warner's (TWX) Warner Home Video and Hachette Book Group. Disagreements have led Amazon to delay orders for Hachette books and suspend preorders for Warner DVD and Blu-ray releases. Holding back on "The Silkworm" has some meaty implications. Telling shoppers to sign up to be notified when the book is available -- instead of allowing them to lock in their purchases now -- is going to cost Amazon sales. It's is also delaying the promised delivery of several Hachette books, advising buyers that they will have to wait a couple of weeks instead of a couple of days. Video buffs are also finding Amazon less useful. Amazon delayed preorders of "The Lego Movie" until just before its release on Tuesday. Next week's big home release -- "300: Rise of an Empire" -- is not currently available. These are just some of the DVDs and Blu-rays being put out by Warner Home Video. Despite the fact that Kodiak Oil & Gas (NYSE: KOG  ) has decided to be acquired by Whiting Petroleum (NYSE: WLL  ) for slightly less than market value for similar deals recently, Wall Street seems to love the transaction. Both Kodiak and Whiting have seen shares climb by 10.1% and 10.4%, respectively, following the announcement, which suggests there might have been something bigger to the deal. Let's take a look at what has changed recently for Kodiak and how that could impact other smaller players in the Bakken such as Oasis Petroleum (NYSE: OAS  ) and Triangle Petroleum (NYSEMKT: TPLM  ) .

Triangle Petroleum (TPLM) came within pennies of doubling since I profiled it at $5.40 a share back in June on Friday. This was twenty months before my prediction that the fast growing concern could achieve those levels. Triangle shows there can quite a bit a value still left among the smaller Bakken players. I view these small E&P firms almost like biotechs and use the same form of "shotgun investing" I do with that sector. Here are two small Bakken producers which could award aggressive growth investors in the future.

Shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG  ) hit a new 52-week high after posting stronger revenue than analysts were expecting. The burrito roller also indicated that menu price increases are on the way in a move that will increase margins. Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) also landed a fresh 52-week high, but it doesn't report until next week. The big push for the leading video service was a dozen Emmy nominations for House of Cards and Arrested Development. There's always a model-affirming Emmy nod in the banana stand. In fact, I had one such moment last year when I finally sold my shares of Inteliquent (NASDAQ: IQNT  ) around $12 per share after holding them for much less time than I had originally planned. The largest single event the company has achieved is the acquisition of Tinet from Inteliquent (IQNT) , which had been IQNT's global data business. IQNT provides services to telecom providers, helping them deliver their network reach. With the divestiture of Tinet, IQNT's major focus is the delivery of voice versus data services.

www.sixflags.com Major market indexes may be hitting new highs, but not everyone is celebrating. Given the lofty stock valuations and slowly expanding economy, many investors are starting to hunt for high-yielding stocks that can provide some steady income to help offset any upcoming market declines. Utility stocks, real estate investment trusts and limited partnerships are magnetic because of their chunky yields, but let's look beyond the obvious high-payers. Let's check out a few investments generating high payouts in some unlikely places. Six Flags (SIX) -- 5.1 percent yield It seems as if you can't run an amusement park chain as a public company without rewarding your stakeholders with some spending money for the next time they hit the park. This can probably be attributed to Cedar Fair (FUN), which as a limited partnership shells out most of its profits as distributions. This translated into a head-turning yield of 5.7 percent. Six Flags isn't too shabby, presently yielding more than 5 percent. Even SeaWorld (SEAS) is now brandishing a yield north of 4 percent, largely the result of losing nearly a third of its value after a poorly received quarterly report a few weeks ago. Running a theme park isn't cheap. It takes frequent sizable investments during the off-seasons to beef up the attractions. However, Six Flags is finding a way to build out its gated attractions while still being able to return money to its shareholders. Mattel (MAT) -- 4.3 percent yield Barbie, Hot Wheels and American Girl are just some of the famous playthings produced by Mattel. Barbie sales have slowed in recent years, plunging 15 percent in Mattel's latest quarter, and having a few more hit toys and games this upcoming holiday season wouldn't hurt. The toy-making giant has been struggling lately, missing Wall Street's profit targets in each of the past three quarters. Still, toy makers apparently don't play games when it comes to their payouts. Top Rising Companies To Watch For 2014

Single-cup coffee maker Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (NASDAQ: GMCR  ) has defied skeptics like myself who thought its business was more stale than day-old joe after the patents expired on its K-Cup dispensers.

Not that the stock didn't crater. After peaking at well over $100 a share in 2011, shares tumbled into the mid-teens last year, but they have shown surprising resilience and were recently as high as $83 a stub. Not bad for a business model thought to have as much strength as a used coffee filter.

Green Mountain's stock has now pulled back about 17% from those highs, and while I've been a longtime bear on the company, I think it's once again gotten as good as it's going to get.

Sip on this
The argument for greater growth looks good on the surface. Even after the entrance of competitors into the coffee pod market, Green Mountain still owns about 60% of the single-serve market with the rest of the market bunching up in the mid-teens. Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) is a distant second at 18% and J.M. Smucker (NYSE: SJM  ) is third at 16% (in addition to its jams and jellies, Smucker owns coffee names Folgers and Millstone).

One beauty products player that insiders are snapping up a large amount of stock in here is Elizabeth Arden (RDEN), which is engaged in the manufacture, distribution, marketing and sale of fragrances, skin care and cosmetic products worldwide. Insiders are buying this stock into massive weakness, since shares have plunged sharply in 2014 by 51%.

Elizabeth Arden has a market cap of $511 million and an enterprise value of $893 million. This stock trades at a cheap valuation, with a forward price-to-earnings of 29. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 25.5%, and for next year it's pegged at 243.9%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $56.31 million and its total debt is $436.85 million.

A beneficial owner just bought 100,019 shares, or about $1.58 million worth of stock, at $15.83 per share. That same beneficial owner also just bought 559,684 shares, or about $9.50 million worth of stock, at $16.90 per share.

From a technical perspective, RDEN is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern, since shares found buying interest over the last two months at $14.65 to $15.63 a share. Following that bottom, shares of RDEN have started to bounce higher and it's now quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

If you're bullish on RDEN, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above some near-term support at $15.63 a share and then once it breaks out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $17.89 to $18.60 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average action of 582,318 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then RDEN will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone from August that started near $21 a share.

The decliners keep greed in check while reminding us about the risks of the equity markets. Let's go over some of last week's best and worst performers. China Finance Online (JRJC) -- Up 131 percent last week The market's biggest winner last week was China Finance Online, more than doubling after introducing a new trading platform. The Beijing-based financial website operator announced that the new offering was the country's first integrated, Web-based securities trading service platform. At least one noted worrywart disputed the claim. Citron Research -- a popular publisher of bearish reports on stocks -- tweeted that sloppy reporting and a misleading headline were making it seem as if no other online trading platform existed in the world's most populous nation. The bulls won out. Shares of China Finance Online closed sharply higher in each of last week's five trading days. TrueCar (TRUE) -- Up 33 percent last week Closer to home, another online platform moved nicely higher after striking a deal with Chrysler and auto insurer GEICO (BRK-A). TrueCar operates a negotiation-free car buying and selling platform. It launched a platform that could shake up the insurance industry, where roughly 3 million cars are totaled each year. Insurers have typically just written a settlement check and provided a rental car voucher to cover the incident, but TrueCar's new plan would work with launch partners GEICO and Chrysler -- and other members of its insurance affinity partners in the future -- to work with the insured to directly replace the vehicle. TrueCar went public at $9 just three months ago. The stock has been revving higher, going on to more than double in its brief time on the market. Auto parts maker Visteon (NYSE: VC) clearly embodies the new thinking about share buybacks. Another stock that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Quad/Graphics (QUAD), which provides print and related services in the U.S., Europe and South America. This stock has is down notably over the last three months, with shares off by 12.2%.

If you look at the chart for Quad/Graphics, you'll notice that this gapped down sharply last November from $36.45 to under $29 with heavy downside volume. Following that gap down, shares of QUAD continued to trend lower, and the stock hit a new low at $23.48 a share a few trading sessions later. That said, shares of QUAD have now started to uptrend since printing that low, with shares moving higher from $23.48 to its recent high of $27.67 a share. During that uptrend, shares of QUAD have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of QUAD within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in QUAD if it manages to break out above its 50-day moving average of $27.29 a share to more near-term overhead resistance at $27.67 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 185,427 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then QUAD will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone that started at $36.45 a share.

Traders can look to buy QUAD off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits just below more near-term support at $25 to $24.50 a share. One can also buy QUAD off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

My first earnings short-squeeze play is commercial printing services player Quad/Graphics (QUAD), which is set to release numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Quad/Graphics to report revenue of $1.32 billion on earnings of 92 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float Quad/Graphics is very high at 17.1%. That means that out of the 26.02 million shares in the tradable float, 5.18 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a high short interest on a stock with a relatively low tradable float. Any bullish earnings news could easily set off a monster short-squeeze for shares of QUAD post-earnings.

From a technical perspective, QUAD is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last month, with shares moving higher from its low of $28.44 to its intraday high of $35.99 a share. During that uptrend, shares of QUAD have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action.

If you're bullish on QUAD, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above its 52-week high at $35.99 a share (or Tuesday's intraday high if higher) with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 149,155 shares. If that breakout hits, then QUAD will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $45 to $50 a share.

I would simply avoid QUAD or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout, and then drops back below some near-term support levels at $34 to $33 a share with high volume. If we get that move, then QUAD will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major support areas at its 50-day moving average o

Stocks: Nothing holding the market back

Nasdaq weekly chart

The Nasdaq rallied this week. Click the chart for more markets data.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) With the government shutdown and debt ceiling showdown in the rear view, investors can breathe a sigh of relief -- for now.

They'll turn their attention back to the economy and earnings.

The September jobs report, delayed by the government shutdown, will finally be released Tuesday. The report was originally scheduled to come out on October 4. According to economists surveyed by Briefing.com, it is expected that 183,000 jobs were added last month and that unemployment rate remained steady, at 7.3%.

This report won't provide any clues as to the effects of the government shutdown. But weekly jobless claims reports have already shown that impact. Last week's report, which covered the first portion of the shutdown, revealed unemployment filings from about 70,000 federal workers. Many will be forced to pay the benefits they received back, as Congress has approved to retroactively pay federal workers.

Stocks may also set some more records. The major U.S. indexes are all up sharply this year and held up well despite fears of a possible debt default. The S&P 500 ended the week at an all-time high while the Dow is about 2% off its peak of 15,709.60 from last month. The tech-heavy Nasdaq was even above 3,900. It hasn't been that high since the dot-com bubble burst in 2000.

Last week, the Nasdaq gained 3%, including 1% growth on Friday. The S&P added 2% -- and posted only one losing day last week -- and the Dow was up about 1% on the week.

Keeping an eye on earnings: The federal government shut down after the third quarter closed, but two of the largest federal government contractors may give some clues about the damage that was done during their latest earnings reports.

Lockheed Martin (LMT, Fortune 500), which reports results Tuesday morning, received almost $40 billion in government contracts last year and blamed the shutdown for causing at least 3,000 employee furloughs at the company. Dow component Boeing (BA, Fortune 500) releases earnings Wednesday morning. It landed nearly $30 billion in contracts last year, according to the General Services Administration.

Many other high-profile companies are on tap to! report their latest numbers, including McDonalds (MCD, Fortune 500), Netflix (NFLX), Caterpillar (CAT, Fortune 500), Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500), AT&T (T, Fortune 500), Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) and Amazon.com (AMZN, Fortune 500).

New iPads coming? The biggest tech event of the week isn't likely to be an earnings report. The company is widely expected to unveil its latest iterations of its iPad tablet. Apple's stock is still well below its all-time highs from September 2012. But shares have rebounded lately and are back above $500 thanks to indications of strong demand for its new iPhone 5S. Apple investors will be hoping that the new iPads will continue its recent hot streak. To top of page

Finally, consider NuStar Energy (NYSE: NS) and its general partner NuStar GP Holdings (NYSE: NSH). Like ETE, NSH went public in 2006 and has also significantly outperformed its limited partner since:

The vast majority of partnerships don’t have a publicly-traded GP. But in each of these three cases in which the GP is publicly traded, the GP tends to outperf! orm the L! P units on long-term gains, an advantage somewhat offset by the typically higher LP yield.

One energy player that insiders are loading up on here is NuStar Energy L.P. (NS), which is engaged in the terminalling, storage, and marketing of petroleum products, and transportation of petroleum products and anhydrous ammonia primarily in the U.S. and the Netherlands. Insiders are buying this stock into decent strength, since shares are up 20% so far in 2014.

NuStar Energy L.P. has a market cap of $4.7 billion and an enterprise value of $7.4 billion. This stock trades at a fair valuation, with a forward price-to-earnings of 23.68. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 126.6%, and for next year it's pegged at 19.7%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $49.08 million and its total debt is $2.73 billion. This stock currently sports a dividend yield of 7.2%.

A director just bought 100,000 shares, or about $6.2 million worth of stock, at $61.71 to $62.52 per share.

From a technical perspective, NS is currently trending above its 200-day moving average and just below its 50-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has just started to bounce modestly higher right above its 200-day moving average of $57.34 a share. That bounce is starting to push shares of NS within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above some key overhead resistance levels.

If you're bullish on NS, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above some key near-term support levels at $58.46 or above its 200-day at $57.34 and then once it breaks out above its 50-day moving average of $62.93 a share to some more near-term overhead resistance levels at $64.73 to $65.75 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average action of 461,414 shares. If that breakout hits soon, t! hen NS wi! ll set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels $6

Regado Biosciences Inc (RGDO): An Under $10 Stock To Transform, Dominate ACS Market

Regado Biosciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:RGDO) offers investors the rare opportunity for exposure to a highly differentiated, advanced stage drug in the $1 billion plus acute coronary syndrome (ACS) market for little over cash value.

Acute coronary syndrome happens when the heart is not getting enough blood, leading to unstable angina and heart attack. Regado's product pipeline encompasses three actively controllable antithrombotic systems: REG1, REG2, and REG3.

Regado's lead program, REG1, is a novel anti-coagulant system for patients with ACS with a potent factor IX inhibitor and active "brake system" to inactivate the anti-coagulant rapidly and prevent bleeding.

REG1 is being developed for use in patients with a wide variety of acute coronary syndromes, or ACS, undergoing a percutaneous coronary intervention, or PCI, a hospital-based procedure used to mechanically open or widen obstructed coronary arteries.

Regado has a unique platform of actively controllable antithrombotic drugs for patients with cardiovascular disease that is leveragable across multiple indications. REG2 and REG3 are in the preclinical stages being studied for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis and Diabetic Vasculopathy, respectively.

"With tangible de-risking events in 2014 and 2015, we believe that significant upside potential exists as Regado seeks to defeat brand leader ANGIOMAX in a high-profile head-to-head study with favorable phase 3 design features," BMO Capital Markets analyst Jim Birchenough said in a client note.

The ongoing phase 3 REGULATE study of REG1 versus brand leader Angiomax in patients with non-ST elevated myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and elective angioplasty patients is well designed to demonstrate superior ischemic event reduction against a lesser comparator than heparin.

Meanwhile, a review of phase 2b data historical trials of Angiomax compared to Heparin suggest that the worst case result for REG1 (upper bound of the 95 percent confidence interval) would still ! beat a consistent average result for Angiomax by 28 percent. In 2012, the Medicines Company (NASDAQ:MDCO) reported net Angiomax global sales of $548 million, including $502 million in the US.

"With ~$1B in brand sales potential in both the US and EU, we believe that a superiority claim to ANGIOMAX, lower bleeding risk than heparin and pharmacoeconomic benefit of early catheter removal and patient release should readily support the $600M peak sales estimate," Birchenough said.

The company recently announced the enrollment of the first patient in its REGULATE-PCI clinical trial. The late state study compares the effects of Regado's REG1 to bivalirudin in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) electively or for the treatment of unstable angina (UA) or non-ST elevated myocardial infarction (N-STEMI).

REGULATE-PCI, if successful, will become the cornerstone of Regado's international new drug applications, expected to be filed in early 2016.

Because of its actively controllable nature, REG1 may offer several advantages over the current standard of care heparin and Angiomax, including reduced ischemic events, reduced rate of serious bleeding events, predictable dosing, favorable pharmacoeconomics, and improved patient experience.

Best India Stocks To Own Right Now

Each year in the US, approximately 1.36 million hospitalizations have ACS listed as either the primary or secondary discharge diagnosis. REG1 is expected to cost roughly $1,300 per patient, at a slight discount to bivalrudin.

"We expect that REG1 will enter the market in 2017 and increase its market share to roughly 50% by 2022, in both NSTEMI-ACS and elective PCI patients and remain at that level through 2025, the outer limit of our model," Birchenough said.

"We estimate initial launch of REG1 in the US in 2017 with $63M in estimated sales and $12.6M in REG1 royalties, assuming 20% royalty rate! on futur! e partnership. We estimate US sales increasing to $611M in 2022," the analyst added.

Ultimately, the phase 3 progress with lead product REG1 would attract large pharma interest in the form of partnership or M&A.

Regado, which went public in August 2013, is up 48 percent since its IPO. In its short trading period, RGDO traded as high as $9.39.

Best Promising Stocks To Own Right Now

Onyx Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ONXX  ) is having a garage sale, but it doesn't appear that Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN  ) has been invited.

The promising cancer developer confirmed over the weekend that Amgen had made an offer to acquire Onyx for $120 per share, a 38.2% premium above Friday's close. Onyx certainly didn't waste any time rejecting the bid, commenting that it "significantly undervalued Onyx and its prospects, and was not in the best interest of Onyx or its shareholders." That hasn't, however, stopped Onyx from actively engaging in additional acquisition chatter with other interested parties outside of Amgen.

The interest in Onyx will come down to two big questions: How much is it worth considering that it only receives a percentage of net sales on two of its three cancer drugs? And who might the buyer be?

How Onyx makes its money
The first question, as I've noted, is quite tricky.

Nexavar, the company's most mature cancer drug, is currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat the most common forms of kidney and liver cancer. Aside from Japan, though, it splits the profits of Nexavar with licensing partner Bayerdown the middle. There's also a strong possibility that Nexavar could be in line for an added indication in treating thyroid cancer based on the extended progression-free survival it delivered relative to the placebo in a late-stage trial.

Top Net Payout Yield Companies To Buy Right Now: Ishares Msci Korea (EWY)

iShares MSCI South Korea Index Fund (the Fund) seeks to provide investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of publicly traded securities in the aggregate in the South Korean market. The Fund's performance is measured by the MSCI Korea Index (the Index).

The Fund invests in a representative sample of securities in the Index, which has a similar investment profile as the Index. iShares MSCI South Korea Index Fund's investment advisor is Barclays Global Fund Advisors.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jeff Reeves]

Of course, Samsung massive presence has weighed on the region lately. In the last 12 months, the iShares MSCI South Korea Index Fund (EWY) has declined about 4%, pretty much the same performance as Samsung stock.

  • [By Benjamin Shepherd]

The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index (NYSE: EEM) seems to have halted its slide. The index bottomed out year-to-date on February 3, when it was down 11.2 percent. Since then, it has gained 1.5 percent, but bargains in the emerging markets still abound.

As I discussed in Plan, Not a Panictwo weeks ago, emerging markets are in much better economic shape today than they were even just a few years ago, much less during the currency crisis that peaked in 1998. Foreign exchange reserves are generally much more robust, budget deficits are narrower if they exist at all and, so far at least, the full-blown currency war that many were predicting last year isn likely to breakout.

With rationality finally setting in, this is a terrific time to do a little bargain hunting in the emerging markets.

The most obvious play here is the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index itself. Covering China (18.8 percent of assets), South Korea (16 percent), Taiwan (12 percent) and Brazil (10.2 percent) with smaller positions spanning Asia and Europe, the fund is most exposed to any shift in sentiment.

The fund is currently trading at just 10.2 times forward one-year earnings, well below its average of about 18 times over the past two decades. On a price-to-sales basis it is even more attractive valued at just 1.03 times; the last time the index was this cheap on a sales basis was early 2009.

So while there are always dangers in trying to call a bottom to any market move, valuations alone are attractive enough to start pulling bargain hunters back in.

A broadly diversified play on an emerging market turnaround, iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index is a great buy up to 45, which leaves plenty of room to run back to the average.

For those who can tolerate a bit more risk, you can also drill down and make more country-specific bets.

At this point my favorite would be iShares MSCI South Korea Index Fund (NYSE: EWY).

What a ride it’s been for investors inTetra Technologies (TTI) today.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Shares of Tetra Technologies traded down as much as 16% this morning after the oil & gas services company reported a profit of 6 cents not including Maritech and other unusual items, missing analyst forecasts for 19 cents. Tetra Technologies also said it would make between 50 cents and 60 cents during fiscal 2014, below forecasts for 66 cents.

At 2:38 p.m., however, Tetra was trading down just 0.8% at $10.88. RBC’s Kurt Hallead and team explain why:

Tetra Technologies rallied after starting the day at -15%. We think there was an overreaction to the headline miss andTetra Technologies’ core operating business results, along with 2H14 guidance, were in line with expectations. Moving forward, the company has some key catalysts on the horizon that should lead to significantly improved operating performance and investor awareness. Key Catalysts:

    1. Get Maritech (E&P P&A liability in GoM) off the books. Ideally by 3Q. Once this is done,Tetra Technologies may implement a dividend or share repo program.

    2. Broaden Production Testing customer base, which should lead to a ramp in margins.

    3. Increase scale of Compressco through M&A, along with awareness of the MLP’s value to Tetra Technologies.

    4. Sell the offshore services business to simplify business structure.

Shares of Tetra Technologies are down 12% in 2014.

Although oil prices are at multi year lows, nowmight be the time to start taking a closer look atsmall cap gas compression or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) stocks like TETRA Technologies, Inc (NYSE: TTI), Exterran Holdings, Inc (NYSE: EXH) and Propell Technologies Group Inc (OTCBB: PROP)as oil and natural gas prices willinevitably rise once again. To start with, natural gas compression services areneeded to transport natural gas from low-pressure wells into gathering systems, storage and processing facilitiesas well as to maintain production as reservoir pressure declines. In addition, compression servicesare used to extract gas fromunconventional natural gas sources like shale plays. As for so-called enhanced oil recovery or EOR, itsa generic term for the techniques used for increasing the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field with these potential methods including steam flood and water flood injectionor hydraulic fracturing(so-called fracking). Naturally, demand for compression services and EOR technologies are impacted by (the temporary)low oil and gas commodity prices and so are the share prices for publicly traded stocks in the space.

Advisors' Opinion:

Hi-Crush Partners (NYSE: HCLP  ) and U.S. Silica Holdings (NYSE: SLCA  ) could also pose a threat to CARBO's higher-end products. CARBO has worked feverishly to convince drillers that ceramic proppants are much stronger than sand, and can withstand the high temperatures and pressures of deep, fractured wells. Since Hi-Crush's IPO, however, it does appear that the tide has shifted to sand, as Carbo's revenues have declinedwhile Hi-Crush and U.S. Silica have gained. Increased competition from a number of Chinese companies that have flooded the domestic market with cheap ceramic proppants is also a danger to CARBO's higher-quality products, provided that the cut-rate ceramics are actually up to the task.

Shares of monocrystalline sand producer U.S. silica have soared this year along with the prospects for the country's energy production. Using proppants can significantly improve a well's profitability and productivity. Aside from its booming oil and gas business, U.S. Silica provides raw materials for various industrial purposes.
