For some reason, certain companies can attract buyers no matter the circumstance. I would put Symantec (SYMC) in that category. Shares have gained nearly 20% this year even as Symantec prospects deteriorated.

Stocks delivered again in 2014. Even after a poor start in January and wobbles in October and December, the U.S. market climbed 11.4 percent and ended the year close to record levels. The solid gain pushed the bull run for stocks into its sixth year, the longest such streak since the 1990s. Investors have been encouraged by rising corporate earnings and a strengthening U.S. economy, which helped stocks overcome a brief winter chill in growth and tensions with Russia. The stock market also overcame worries about the impact of the end of the Federal Reserve's stimulus program. Those who stuck out the market's ups and downs were rewarded with double-digit returns for the fifth year out of the last six. "Companies delivered and the ability to produce on the bottom line remained resilient," said Jeff Kleintop, Charles Schwab's chief global investment strategist. "Ultimately, that's what stocks track." All the major stock averages are ending the year with respectable returns. The Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) has returned 13.7 percent including dividends, after a return of 32 percent in 2013. The stock market also experienced its biggest bout of volatility in more than two years. Stocks plunged as much as 9.8 percent in October on concerns about global growth and worries about the spread of the Ebola virus. The market also managed to climb despite a big drop in oil prices that hit energy companies. Geopolitical tensions flared as Russia seized Crimea, war broke out in eastern Ukraine and the Islamic State group seized swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria. These were some of the biggest themes in the financial markets in 2014: A Resilient Economy The backdrop for the stock market's gains was a gradually strengthening U.S. economy. Hiring and consumer confidence continued to improve. Despite a big contraction in the first quarter caused by an unusually harsh winter, the economy kept growing. The average pace of growth climbed to 2.7 percent by the end

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Anders Bylund]
The ACSI doesn't break down company scores into their component parts, but let's take a couple of wild guesses. American Internet services are generally overpriced and underpowered compared to the options available in, say, Southeast Asia and Western Europe. Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) is trying to change all that by introducing low-cost gigabit fiber service in a handful of test markets. That business is far too small to earn a ranking in the ACSI studies, but it's putting pressure on rivals nationwide to do better. And consumers take notice, which might explain some of these dismal scores.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) messed up, and in a few months they may start paying the price. When Microsoft's Xbox One fails to gain traction the way its current video-game console did -- and when the high-tech Google Glass specs falter at the retail level -- there will be no shortage of scapegoats.

In the end, Apple needs to look at what archrival Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) is doing with hardware partners Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM ) and Sony (NYSE: SNE ) by its side -- and then do it better. Executing on this simple plan (or not) will make all the difference for Apple next year.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]
CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

Servers: Server revenue is also in a dangerous position. The graph shows how the market changed from 2008 through 2012, favoring the Iaas (infrastructure as a service) hosting business model (Amazon (AMZN) and Rackspace (RAX)), while leaving the server-side infrastructure business model in great trouble. At this point, the trend towards adoption of hosted Iaas as a replacement for traditional in-house server-side infrastructure can't possibly be reversed.

YouTube has such a vast audience partly because it was among the first to offer a comprehensive platform for online video posting, viewing and sharing. Those early (and largely amateur) videos have been joined by polished, professional ones that have attracted a much wider audience, both to YouTube and a growing number of online video sites. The content that these consumers view ranges from short clips to full-length movies available to rent or own. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Hulu are examples of the full-length video option.

It's a great idea to get children interested in investing early, and buying some stocks for them is a great way to accomplish that. I'd recommend using a very long-term buy-and-hold strategy focused on high-quality, sustainable businesses. I'd forgo dividends and focus on long-term appreciation (just my personal opinion). Stocks that I'd recommend for this strategy include Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN ) , Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B ) , CarMax (NYSE: KMX ) , and Markel (NYSE: MKL ) . All are great companies that I'd be happy to hold for a decade.

Ted S. Warren/APAmazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Amazon (AMZN) is ruffling a lot of feathers with contractual tussles with Time Warner's (TWX) Warner Home Video and Hachette Book Group. Disagreements have led Amazon to delay orders for Hachette books and suspend preorders for Warner DVD and Blu-ray releases. Customers used to finding everything they want through Amazon are now encountering barriers. Amazon wants to draw attention for things like its new Prime Music digital streaming and whatever it's introducing on Wednesday, but instead it's generating negative buzz. Bury the Hachette Flexing its muscles, the leading online retailer last month stopped taking advance orders of Hachette books and is delaying shipments by several weeks. This is a big deal. Hachette is the publisher behind several of this summer's big releases. On Thursday, we get J.K. Rowling's new book, but Amazon shoppers were being told earlier this week that they can't preorder the next installment in her gumshoe series. Holding back on "The Silkworm" has some meaty implications. Telling shoppers to sign up to be notified when the book is available -- instead of allowing them to lock in their purchases now -- is going to cost Amazon sales. It's is also delaying the promised delivery of several Hachette books, advising buyers that they will have to wait a couple of weeks instead of a couple of days. Video buffs are also finding Amazon less useful. Amazon delayed preorders of "The Lego Movie" until just before its release on Tuesday. Next week's big home release -- "300: Rise of an Empire" -- is not currently available. These are just some of the DVDs and Blu-rays being put out by Warner Home Video. Reports indicate that a contract dispute is leading to Amazon playing hardball by holding back on the releases. You're Not Getting Warner Amazon is trying to show that it's such a big force in e-tail that it can influence sales activity, but is it biting off more than it can chew? This fight coul
