Oil and gas companies' overzealous production of natural gas, and natural gas liquids, has restored the fortunes of domestic chemical producers, an energy-intensive industry that relies on these commodities to generate power, and as feedstock, explains Peter Staas, editor of Capitalist Times.
Within this space, olefin producers have benefited the most from trends in the energy patch. The two most prominent olefins, ethylene and propylene, serve as the basic building blocks for three-quarters of all chemicals, plastics, and synthetic fibers.
Not only do shares of well-positioned US olefin producers stand to benefit from depressed ethane prices and near-term investments in capacity expansions, but, more importantly, the group also enjoys a substantial cost advantage over peers with production facilities in Asia and Europe.
Holland-based petrochemical outfit LyondellBasell Industries (LYB) remains the best bet for income-seeking investors to profit from persistently weak ethane prices in North America.

Outside the Dow, energy investment vehicles Linn Energy (NASDAQ: LINE ) and LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO ) fell 19% and 17% respectively after revealing that the SEC was investigating the companies. As Fool contributor Sean Williams reported earlier today, it appears that the investigation will center on Linn's handling of accounting procedures, especially in connection with hedging strategies that the company has used. With LinnCo holding limited liability company units of Linn Energy, both companies' fortunes are tied to the results of any investigation the SEC eventually conducts.
Hot Energy Companies For 2014: SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (SDT)
SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (The Trust) is a statutory trust. The Trust was created to acquire and hold the Royalty Interests for the benefit of Trust unitholders. SandRidge conveyed to the Trust the Royalty Interests in specified oil and natural gas properties in the Mississippian formation in Alfalfa, Garfield, Grant, Major and Woods counties in Oklahoma (the Underlying Properties). These Royalty Interests were derived from SandRidge interests in a 36 wells and the equivalent of 123 horizontal development wells to be drilled in the Mississippian formation (Trust Development Wells) within an area of mutual interest (AMI), consisting of approximately 49,600 gross acres (42,000 net acres) in the counties where the Underlying Properties are located.
Effective January 1, 2011, the Royalty Interests entitle the Trust to receive 90% of the proceeds from the sale of oil and natural gas production attributable to its net revenue interest in the Initial Wells and 50% of the proceeds from the sale of oil and natural gas production attributable to SandRidge net revenue interest in the Trust Development Wells. As of December 31, 2011, the Trust properties consisted of Royalty Interests in the Initial Wells, 48 wells (equivalent to approximately 53 Trust Development Wells under the development agreement) and the equivalent of approximately 70 Trust Development Wells to be drilled in the Mississippian formation.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
SandRidge has made a huge bet on the Mississippian Lime shale play, especially after selling off its Permian Basin assets late last year. Unfortunately, that bet hasn't paid off well for shareholders, as the company saw its spun-off royalty trusts SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR ) fail to meet their projections for distribution amounts during the first quarter. The main problem has been that wells in the Mississippian Lime have produced more natural gas than expected, and even with a slight rebound in gas prices, it still doesn't produce adequate margins compared to oil and natural-gas liquids.
- [By Matt DiLallo]
The problem here is that SandRidge has beendependenton asset sales and its running out of assets to sell. In addition to the Permian sale, SandRidge has now taken three royalty trusts public. One consisting of Permian Basin assets, SandRidge Permian Trust (NYSE: PER ) and two consisting of Mississippian assets, SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR ) . While SandRidge still owns a portion of each trust, it likely will continue to sell off its ownership stake in each trust as well as other assets it still owns. At some point SandRidge will need to live within its oil and gas cash flows, otherwise, its not worth owning.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
After yesterday’s close, Linn Energy (LINE) agreed to swapped acreage with a unit of ExxonMobil (XOM) that adds production of about 85 million equivalent cubic feet per day for Linn.
European Pressphoto AgencyRaymond James analysts Kevin Smith and Kenton Tindall explain why they like the deal:
Qualitatively, this is an ideal swap… LINN has made a concerted effort to reduce its overall production declines and capital spending. Essentially the company is swapping production that is declining at roughly 35% per year for gas properties that are declining at 6%, resulting in much more stable cash flow. Additionally, this transaction allows LINN to lever its already large position in Hugoton in order to deliver more operating synergies
lus this transaction reduces LINN leverage in the process: Another added benefit is the transaction helps reduce LINN debt metrics. Essentially, LINN was able to increase its cash flow without issuing any debt or equity, so on a net debt / EBITDA basis, LINN is less levered pro forma the transaction close.
Citigroup’s Faisel Khan is not so sure Linn got the better of the deal:
Linn estimates net accretion to distributable cash flows of $30-$40 mil or $0.09-$0.12 per unit on an annualized basis as a result of the aforementioned asset swap. The accretion estimate appears slightly low as the partnership is giving up upside from the Midland basin assets resulting from additional capital spending later this year. In addition, accretion estimates do not include potential upside from higher utilization at the partnership Jayhawk gas processing plant located in the Hugoton field.
Shares of Linn Energy have gained 0.6% to $28.45 at 3:12 p.m. today, while LinnCo (LNCO) has risen 0.4% to $27.59. ExxonMobil has fallen 0.5% to $101.52.
