The Dow surges, but international results remain mixed
The Dow has gotten off to a good start to the year despite being weighed down by a few lagging stocks, such as industrial giant Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) . While a majority of Dow stocks have recorded double-digit percentage gains in 2013, Caterpillar has lost more than 10% so far due to slowing economic conditions around the globe. Sales are falling at the company, and China's recent slowdown has sent investors fleeing.

The dichotomy between the two segments would seem to represent what we've seen in the broader market where agriculture equipment powerhouse Deere (NYSE: DE  ) beat analyst expectations in the first quarter as it said it strong, 5% growth throughout the year should be expected, while construction equipment leader Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) had to cut jobsbecause of waning demand.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Halliburton has focused much of its attention on the booming U.S. market, giving it more exposure to domestic production than more globally focused rival Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) . With domestic drilling activity having been fairly weak lately, Halliburton's U.S. concentration has raised concerns among investors, as land-based rig counts have fallen sharply. But with efficiency gains from multi-pad drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, bulls hope that rig counts don't accurately reflect actual production activity and therefore that Halliburton's earnings will hold up better than some expect.

  • [By Lee Jackson]

Energy: Schlumberger Ltd. (NYSE: SLB)crushed earnings by an astonishing 50.9% last quarter. With Mexico changing its policy on oil exploration, the oil field services leader may see continued strong earnings growth in the years ahead. The consensus price target for the stock is posted at $96. Investors are paid a 1.5% dividend.

As June came to an end, the company finalized a joint venture, OneSubsea, with Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) . The intriguing partnership -- in which Cameron has a 60% interest, with the remainder Schlumberger's -- will develop products, systems, and services for the subsea oil and gas market.

Similarly, the company's forward dividend yield could stand some boosting, another possibility made more feasible by an acquisitions slowdown. Currently, however, with a forward yield of 0.80%, Varco falls short of such other big oilfield services providers as Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , with its 1.80% forward yield, or Baker Hughes (NYSE: BHI  ) , at 1.40%. On that basis, it would constitute a distinct positive to see National Oilwell Varco's own anticipated yield raised to at least 1.00%, a level that would hardly result in an arduous payout for the company.
