The economy is continuing to add jobs, the ADP National Employment Index said Wednesday, just not a lot of them.
The index, generated by data from Automated Data Processing Inc. (NASDAQ: ADP), said private employers added 175,000 jobs in January, down from 227,000 in December and 289,000 in November. While it was in line with the Wall Street estimate, the index suggests 2014 job growth will continue to be modest, if steady.
The report also hints that ADP and others in payroll processing and the uniforms business might be looking at a so-so year as well, and shares of ADP and Paychex Inc. (NASDAQ: PAYX) were lower. Shares of uniform supplier Cintas Corp. (NASDAQ: CTAS) were holding their own. Here is a look at the three companies.
ADP
ADP reported fiscal second quarter earnings of $0.78 on Wednesday, a penny better than expected. The company said hiring was fairly strong in November in particular. It sees 7% to 8% revenue growth for 2014, a touch better than earlier guidance of 7% growth. But the stock was off $1.35, or 1.8%, to $73.60 Wednesday. The consensus estimate for the second quarter is $1.08 a share, up from $0.99 a year ago. Revenue is seen rising 7.2% to $3.34 billion. The consensus price target on the stock is $80.50.

Let's move on to our case. We have been closely following Skechers (SKX) for 3 years. We initially got interested in September 2010 as we thought the decline in share price from 40 to 25 on the early demise of the toning shoe craze was overdone. It was actually seriously underdone when we got on board and we took some losses as the stock fell from 25 to 20, and we closed the position. We then dabbled in owning the stock as it bounced around in the mid-teens for nearly 18 months as the company liquidated hundreds of millions of dollars of very low demand toning shoes causing them to report losses in 2011 and 2012. The rapid growth of toning shoes and rapid demise significantly disrupted their business for 2 years.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Louis Navellier]
HopFed Bancorp (HFBC), at $85 million in market cap, operates 18 branches in middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky and can be thought of as poster child for what is going on in the small banking sector. An activist investor took a stake in the bank and opposed an ill-advised acquisition. Instead, he suggested HopFed management get its own house in order. Management went along and canceled the deal, instituted a stock buyback plan and doubled the dividend. HFBC was upgraded to an “A” back in May and still is a “strong buy” right now.

When business development companies trade substantially below their last-reported net asset values, or NAV, repurchasing shares can be quite beneficial for shareholders. A repurchase allows a BDC to essentially acquire a portfolio of loans and investments at prices below their stated value.

Daniel Acker/Bloomberg via Getty Images DETROIT -- General Motors (GM) reported a much lower second-quarter profit Thursday due to numerous recalls and the expected cost of at least $400 million for a compensation fund for those killed or injured by a defective ignition switch linked to at least 13 deaths. GM also reiterated that it expected a moderately improved operating profit this year and that its future recall costs would be slightly higher than historic rates. "We're on or ahead of the plan we shared in January," Chief Financial Officer Chuck Stevens told reporters. "Our expectation is that the second half of the year will be better than the first half." Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said strong vehicle pricing in North America "saves the quarter." GM earlier this year recalled 2.6 million cars for the faulty ignition switches, which can cause engine stalls and stop power steering and power brakes from operating and air bags from deploying. The company is under investigation by U.S. safety regulators, Congress and the U.S. Department of Justice over its failure to detect the problems for more than a decade. Net income in the quarter fell to $190 million, or 11 cents a share, from $1.2 billion, or 75 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding one-time items, GM earned 58 cents a share, just below the 59 cents analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S had expected. The company's shares fell 2.9 percent to $36.34 in morning trading. Also Thursday, GM's smaller U.S. rival, Ford Motor (F), posted a higher-than-expected profit on strong results in North America and Europe. One-time items for GM included the charge for establishing the victims' compensation fund, which the company said could still rise by about $200 million, as well as an $874 million charge for a change in how the company will account for recalls in the future. GM previously took charges as recalls occurred, but now it will account for potential future liabilities as the cars

L. Busacca/WireImage for Sirius Satellite Radio A big celebration for Howard Stern and satellite radio will take place on Friday. Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) is hosting Howard Stern's Birthday Bash that afternoon and evening from New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. The celebrity-studded event will naturally be broadcast on its satellite stations, but, in an unusual move, it will also stream the event for free -- worldwide -- through its siriusxm.com website. This is a pretty big fete. Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting the affair, and among the performers who have revealed that they will be part of the show are Jon Bon Jovi, John Fogerty, and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. Comedians Louis C.K., David Letterman, and Sarah Silverman will also be in attendance. In other words, even if you find Stern's polarizing humor, interviews, and antics to be a bit crude, there may be enough celebrities whom you do like on tap to make it worth your while to tune in. Stern Really Did Save Satellite Radio Sirius XM is thriving and profitable with nearly 25.6 million subscribers. That probably wouldn't have been the case without Stern. Satellite radio was a fledgling business occupied by two warring and profitless players when Stern signed a big deal to move his popular terrestrial radio show to the new platform. He went with the smaller Sirius over the larger XM, and the company rewarded the morning show icon with a $500 million deal for an initial five-year contract that kicked in at the start of 2006. The partnership was extended for another five years weeks before the first contract expired. Stern's arrival changed the game for satellite radio. A morning show legend who at his peak attracted as many as 20 million listeners had left terrestrial radio for this premium platform at a time when few cars had satellite receivers and even fewer drivers wanted to pay for it. Stern didn't just make satellite radio viable to the point where a majority of the new cars hitting showrooms now come e
