The Sunday magazine is not intended to replace the Sun's daily print coverage of Las Vegas, according to Greenspun Media Group editor and publisher Brian Greenspun, but will instead complement it with smart reporting comparable to Time or Newsweek.
The magazine is expected to run between 64 and 72 pages, and be printed on newsprint with a glossy cover.
"We believe there is a large readership potential in Las Vegas that does not read the daily newspaper, so The Sunday will fill that need," he said.
The future of the Sun remains uncertain. Last summer, three of the four Greenspun siblings agreed to end a joint operating arrangement with Stephens Media, which owns the rival Las Vegas Review-Journal. Since 2005, the Sun has been delivered as a section within the Review-Journal. The two have separate reporting staffs in separate locations.

Other fracking goings-on
The Environmental Protection Agency continues to move forward with its nationwide study of the potential effects of hydraulic fracturing on groundwater and drinking water. A resulting report is expected to be released in 2014. In the meantime, 31 experts from universities, scientific laboratories, and industry have been appointed to review what promises to be a landmark document. The EPA also has abandoned its interminable and controversial research into whether fracking by Encana (NYSE: ECA ) fouled the water table in Pavillion, Wyo. The effort was a follow-up to a 2011 study by the agency, which purported to find a connection between Encana's operations and the contamination of an aquifer, has been turned over to Wyoming officials. They plan to release a final report next year. The Obama administration has set forth a proposed rule requiring oil and natural gas companies that drill on federal land to disclose the chemicals used in their hydraulic operations. It also would establish standards for well construction and waste disposal.
While water is likely to remain a key consideration for hydraulic fracturing for years to come, there are several other items of importance currently swirling about with regard to unconventional drilling, which has been responsible for a 30% increase in U.S. oil reserves and a 90% incrasee in our gas reserves:A Foolish takeaway
Hydraulic fracturing, it seems, will always be a target for environmental grousing and federal nitpicking. It seems unlikely, however, that it will ever be severely curtailed. On that basis, I'm increasingly becoming a proponent of Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK ) , especially under its new management. - [By David Smith]
Far and wide
Fox's latest version ranges somewhat more widely than its predecessor. Oh sure, there's plenty of attention to environmental damage attributable to Cabot Oil & Gas' (NYSE: COG ) fracking operations in Dimock, Pa., the epicenter of the first film. Butthe follow-up also spends considerable time in Pavillion, Wyo., where the Environmental Protection Agency has contended that hydraulic fracturing by Encana (NYSE: ECA ) has sullied the local aquifer. Only lately has the EPA turned over a second investigation into the matter to Wyoming state authorities. - [By Arjun Sreekumar]
But now, with gas prices above $4 per Mcf, some producers are either resuming or ramping up operations in gassier plays. For instance, Encana (NYSE: ECA ) announced in February that it intends to increase its gas rig count in the Haynesville shale by three this year, citing the play's recently improved profitability.

Earlier this year, after almost a year of active but unsuccessful marketing of a Mississippian Lime Joint Venture and following several mixed test results, Encana Corporation (ECA) designated its ~320,000 net Mississippian Lime acres in Kansas for sale. In July, Encana followed with a decision to divest its remaining acreage in Osage County in Oklahoma, including seven producing wells.

I warned last week that refiners would report relatively poor earnings for Q3, and refinery MLPs could take a hit, presenting a buying opportunity. On Nov. 6 Alon USA Partners (NYSE: ALDW) reported a loss for the third quarter of $16.1 million, or ($0.26) per unit, compared with net income of $120.4 million for the same period last year. Paul Eisman, CEO and president, cited the deteriorating margins that I discussed in last week’s issue: “Our third quarter results were impacted by a volatile and deteriorating margin environment resulting primarily from decreasing discounts for West Texas crude oil.”
