The U.S. Department of Defense awarded Raytheon (NYSE: RTN ) a pair of contracts Wednesday -- one big, one small.
The big one -- in fact, the biggest contract the Pentagon awarded to anyone Wednesday -- is worth $83.8 million to Raytheon. A sole-source, cost-plus-incentive-fee, and cost-plus-fixed-fee foreign military sales contract modification, it hires Raytheon to perform software updates, radar repairs, logistics, and other work on AN/TPY-2 radars being provided to the government of the United Arab Emirates for use as part of Lockheed Martin's (NYSE: LMT ) new Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, system.
Lockheed Martin won the $2 billion contract to build a THAAD system for the UAE in 2011. Raytheon will be working on this contract through Sept. 30, 2018.
The smaller award, worth $19.1 million to Raytheon, hires the company to provide engineering and technical services to the U.S. Navy, other U.S. government agencies, and also foreign governments -- all related to Raytheon's Standard Missiles, models 2, 3, and 6. Foreign governments for which Raytheon will be doing work under this contract include Japan, Australia, South Korea, Germany, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Canada, and Spain. Work on this contract should be completed by next July.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Pendulum]
Amid the challenges in the aluminum industry, Century Aluminum (CENX) has taken positive actions over the last few months. In June, it acquired the Sebree smelter in Kentucky. More importantly, it received approval for a new power contract at its Hawesville facility, which will improve its cost structure, and the company has similar plans for the new Sebree facility. These actions are reducing the company's cost of production and putting it in a better position to manage through the tough part of the aluminum price cycle. As a result of these actions, Century Aluminum's stock price has outperformed its peers. In this article, I will analyze the challenges in the aluminum industry and the positive impact of Century Aluminum's recent actions.

Even as it contemplates shutting down its largest aluminum smelter in the United States, Century Aluminum (NASDAQ: CENX ) says it's planning to buy another smelter entirely. Varian Medical Systems (VAR) and Stryker (SYK) are heading in opposite directions after reporting very different earnings after the close today.
Getty ImagesShares of Stryker have gained 0.5% to $79–they were up as much as 3.1% at $81–after reporting a profit of $1.23, beating forecasts for $1.22, while revenue came in at $2.47 billion, ahead of forecasts for $2.43 billion. Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jonathan Yates]
That is certainly a better way to profit from gold, SPFR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD), and silver, iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV). Both the GLD and the SLV have plunged, but sea treasure recovery is very profitable. The find today demonstrates that fact of investing! Odyssey Marine Exploration (NASDAQ: OMEX) had a huge haul off the coast of Ireland earlier this summer, which is more proof of the profit potential for this industry!!.
- [By Jonathan Yates]
Investors around the world are becoming more aware of the potential riches to be made by companies in the sea treasure recovery industry such as J.D. Hutt (PINK JABA) and Odyssey Marine Exploration (NASDAQ: OMEX) due to the media attention being paid to the raising of the Concordia. More than $60 billion rests on the ocean floor in gold (NYSE: GLD), silver (NYSE: SLV), and other valuables. As detailed in a previous article on this site, Odyssey Marine Exploration just presented at the 2013 Gateway Conference.

Odyssey Marine Exploration (NASDAQ: OMEX )
I love a good metals play as much as any Fool around here, but Odyssey Marine is certainly not on the buy list. Odyssey Marine is a salvage company that searches for, recovers, and monetizes metals and minerals found on the ocean floor. Make no mistake about it, the job is as cool as it sounds; unfortunately, "cool" doesn't always translate into solid profits. - [By Rich Duprey]
Despite silver falling to around $23 an ounce, and gold going below $1,400, now might be the time to invest in Odyssey Marine Exploration (NASDAQ: OMEX ) , the treasure-hunting shipwreck finder whose own stock is down by a third from its 52-week high.
